It was a pretty typical performance review, but I found myself feeling a little frustrated with the process as my areas for improvement and determining goals left me feeling flat.

As a leader, it’s up to you to learn each of your team member’s unique superpowers.

The Fascination Personality Assessment can help you to identify each person’s top advantages, which are how they will be able to be most valuable. It also uncovers the dormant advantage, which is where they’re least likely to be fascinating.

Thinking back to that performance review meeting (and others like it), I realize now that my goals and areas for improvement were focused on my dormant advantages, and that everyone would have been better served if we tapped into my superpowers.

My Fascination Archetype is the Wise Owl. My primary advantage is mystique, which is the language of listening, and my secondary is trust, the language of stability.

Everyone would have been better served by understanding that I am highly observant, assured and steadfast. I’m logical and even-keeled. My highest value is that I am watchful of the details and approach problems systematically to find the best solutions.

As a leader, by using the Fascination Advantage, you’ll have a powerful understanding of your team so you can help to ensure their happiness and ultimately, success in their career.

Managing to Your Team’s Strengths

As I took on more responsibility and moved into the role of manager and coach, I quickly realized that my team performed better when I let them operate within their zone of genius.

Instead of trying to get them to do things they weren’t good at, I managed to their individual strengths, which helped make the entire team stronger.

Often, the impulse as a leader is to assign specific qualities as requirements for each role. We default to thinking that our team must have a certain quality, when really, it’s up to us to identify what assets they bring to the table and to help them use them to perform their role.

As the creator of the Fascination Advantage System, Sally Hogshead shares in her book How the World Sees You, that by identifying each team member’s advantages, you can help each employee rise in value and collaborate to improve overall results.

That was definitely the case with my team as the more everyone was encouraged to operate at their highest and best value, the better results we achieved overall and the more we were able to fascinate!

Better Team Communication

If you’ve ever been part of a team that’s struggling to gel, you know how painful it can be.

Communication styles can clash, there’s miscommunication and things become much more challenging than they need to be.

At the core of this is often a lack of understanding of what people do best, how they best communicate and where people struggle.

For example, remember my primary advantage is mystique, which is the language of listening. This means in a team setting, I do a lot of listening and take my time to consider how to respond. This could be frustrating for a colleague with primary passion as they’re all about the relationship and may take my silence for being standoffish or disengaged.

With this scenario, my teammate would benefit from knowing that with mystique, I’m actually very engaged but I’m taking in all the information to say something that will truly help the team and add to the discussion.

In short, when you leverage the fascination advantage with your team, you can take your communications from frustrated to fascinating.

Introducing the Science of Fascination
Created by Sally Hogshead, the Fascination Advantage System is the first personality test built on branding and it provides unique insight into how you best add value to the world.

Through the science of fascination, you can learn how the world sees you. Learning how we fascinate unlocks a personality superpower that we can use to be our best in everything we do.

The Fascination Advantage is based on 10 years of research studying over 1 million participants. From that research, 49 different personality archetypes were identified based on what are called primary and secondary advantages.

Each of us has a primary advantage which is what makes you most persuasive and captivating. Our secondary advantage is our next best mode of communicating, and it acts together with your primary advantage. Together, these form your personality archetype.

By now, you’re likely thinking “what’s my archetype?”. And the good news is that you can find out in about five minutes with a simple personality assessment.

Once you’re done the assessment, you’ll have a personalized report that shares your archetype and your advantages. There are a total of seven different advantages, each one communicates best using a specific superpower.

How Does the World See You

Now that you know your archetype, here are some specific ways to put the Fascination Advantage into action:

Stand Out by Playing to Your Advantages

When you discover how you’re most likely to fascinate, you can stand out in ways that may have not been possible before. Instead of feeling like you’re a round peg in a square hole, you can fully embrace what you’re absolutely best at, and stay out of those areas where you’re not able to shine.

For example, Passion advantage is the language of relationships. If this is you, you’ll always be most compelling and interesting when you’re connecting and forming relationships.

With primary Passion, you’re going to be able to get people onboard with ideas, collaborate and lead with emotion. Using your Passion superpower you can catalyze people into action, which is why you shouldn’t be hiding out behind the details.

Stay Away From Your Quicksand

The personality assessment not only identifies where you’re at your best, but where you’re least likely to fascinate. This is called your dormant advantage.

Your dormant advantage doesn’t necessarily mean you’re “bad” at this, but more that this type of communication is going to leave you feeling drained.

Let’s say your dormant advantage is Alert. This means that details exhaust you and you really want to focus on the big picture. In this situation, you’re unlikely to wow anyone with amazingly detailed financial reports and it’s going to feel like complete quicksand when you need to do this.

By understanding what your dormant advantage is, you’ll know precisely where you’re not at your highest value and find ways to do less of it over time.

Leverage Team Strengths

If you work on a team, getting to know the archetypes of everyone on your team can be a game changer.

With your existing team, the assessment can be a powerful ally in ensuring everyone is operating at their absolute best and identifying untapped opportunities for growth. It can also help provide context as to why people do what they do, or why they avoid certain tasks at all costs.

Many times, once you learn someone else’s advantage a light bulb will go on. Suddenly, you’ll know why your direct report is so quiet in a meeting while a colleague is an ideas person. (That’s Mystique and Innovation at play.)

Understanding the composition of your team can also help you see where you may be lacking specific advantages. If your team is heavy on Innovation and Passion archetypes, it’s easy to see why deadlines aren’t always met. Or if your team is primarily Alert and Prestige, that may explain why your team meetings are quiet as people are busy listening and why you’ve got a lot of perfectionists in your ranks.

With the insight into your team, you can identify the types of new hires you may need in the future and learn what to look for as you seek to fill specific roles.

These are just a few ways to use the Fascination Advantage as an individual and a team. The possibilities are endless once you unlock the superpowers of your personality.

Understanding How To Use Your Fascinate Assessment Results

There’s a certain magic in understanding how you can bring your best to everything you do.

Which is why I love the Fascination Advantage System, as it helps you unlock your personality superpowers and communicate at your highest – and best – value.

The personality assessment is incredibly powerful, but one of the most common questions I get is how to use this information in the retail environment. We love to learn about ourselves, but the key is to take that information and make it relevant to what we do on a day-to-day basis.

Once you have your assessment results, here are a few ways for you to put it action:

Aligning Your Fascination Advantage with the Retail Brand

Each of the 7 fascination advantages communicate best using a specific superpower, and this holds true for both individuals and brands.

Think about your advantages and then what the fascination advantage is of the brand you work for. How does the brand you work for communicate? What’s the perception of that brand in the marketplace?

For example, a brand like Apple is based on innovation and the idea of changing the rules of the game. While a brand like Louis Vuitton is definitely prestige as it’s about excellence and being outstanding.

When you look at the brand you work for, you’ll find that either  your advantages are aligned or that there’s a mismatch.

If your advantages are aligned to the retail brand, this means you’ll be able to bring that to the table and truly live the brand. As you embody the same way of showing up in the world, you’ll be able to help the company move the agenda forward in a way that’s a true asset to the team.

What happens if your advantages are the complete opposite of those of the retail brand you work for? Typically, brands are going to attract people with the same advantages, so if you work for a trust brand and your primary advantage is passion, you can be an advocate for different points of view.

If you find yourself consistently at odds with the brand’s communication style or way of doing things, that could be a clue that you may be better suited working for a retailer that is closer to your top two advantages.

Use Your Advantage to Get Hired or Promoted

Your fascination advantages are a true superpower, so you can use them to help you get hired or even promoted.

Think about the advantages of the retail brand you work for, as well as what advantages would be considered an asset for the position you’re seeking.

Perhaps you’re looking to move into the role of store manager. Identify how your advantages would best serve that role. For example, if passion is your advantage, you can focus on your ability to build strong working relationships. If alert is your advantage, you can focus on how amazing you are with the details.
The key is to play to your superpowers and to be able to demonstrate how they are the ideal fit for the role.

Even if you look at the role and think that your advantages may not be a great fit, dig a bit deeper. Many times, being different than other candidates will help you stand out, and it’s up to you to show how you’re going to bring something unique to the role.

Leverage Your Advantages Daily

By learning your advantages, you have a touchstone for knowing what you’re amazing at and how you can always add the most value.

Armed with that information, look for ways to leverage those advantages each day. Maybe it’s working with your team or communicating with customers in the store. Whatever it is, focus on what you’re really good at, and find ways to let that shine in everything you do.

For example, if trust is one of your advantages, you can be a force of stability when things are busy or uncertain. Seek out ways to reassure your colleagues and act as the voice of reason when things are changing.

As you focus on your advantages, don’t shy away from sharing what you’re good at with your managers or supervisor. By owning how and when you’re at your best, you’re likely to be seen in that way and provided with opportunities that let you shine.

Balance Out Your Dormant Advantage

If your primary advantages are your superpowers, your dormant advantages are your quicksand.

Your dormant advantage is the mode of communication that is most exhausting and stressful for you. It doesn’t mean you’re necessarily bad in this area, but rather that you’re always going to feel like it’s a lot of extra work.

With your dormant advantage, you’ll want to look for ways to balance it out and, if you can, avoid those situations. (Or at least be prepared for them!) If your dormant advantage is innovation, things like brainstorming sessions are going to feel difficult. Or if your lowest advantage is mystique, you’re not going to like working in isolation or quiet environments.

You may not be able to avoid these situations entirely, but you can get creative about how to work around them so you’re able to show up at your best as much as possible.

Coaching for Success with the Fascination Advantage

E.E. Cummings said, “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are”.

Never were words truer for me.

For years I attended workshops and meetings featuring behavioural tests that continuously put me in the “introvert” box.  While the descriptions were usually accurate, I struggled with what being an introvert meant for me career wise. (Secretly I always hoped some test would tell me I was a rock star.)

My life took a major detour about ten years ago where my world was turned upside down. During this time I invested heavily in myself and career. I attended seminars, workshops, retreats and worked with few amazing coaches.

It was along the way that I attended a weekend event where I first was introduced to the Fascination Assessment.  I thought to myself, finally, a new tool after all this work on myself will reveal me to be a rock star!

Well, as you might have guessed, my core being had not changed. But rather after reviewing my results, I was able to see them in a new perspective.

You see, the Fascination Assessment allows you to understand “How the World Sees You”. When I read my results it was a serious aha moment. I wasn’t being classified as an introvert anymore. Instead, I was the Wise Owl. I was able to embrace this assessment as it was the most like me.

Why Coaching Matters

We’ve all heard the expression “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.

This same principle applies to coaching. The goal of coaching is to guide employees and teach them how to do things for themselves, versus micromanaging the process. Coaching at its best is meant to empower people to succeed in whatever endeavour they are undertaking.

It’s probably safe to say that we all have things we need to work on. Whether it’s how we manage our time or how we interact with colleagues, there’s always room for improvement when it comes to our careers.

While coaching is a valuable tool that organizations can use to help their employees perform to their full potential, it’s also something that sometimes makes people get a little defensive. We all like to think we’re totally awesome just the way we are, right?

Where many organisations struggle with coaching is that while they may be encouraging managers to coach, they don’t have an overarching coaching strategy. This is where hiring a consultant can be a huge benefit.

Having someone come in with the skills and the knowledge to build an overarching coaching plan means you’ll have a consistent coaching program in place and expectations are clearly laid out to everyone involved in the process.

Why I Like Using the Fascination Advantage

Obviously, there are hundreds of coaching programs around. And just as many programs that focus on personality types and their attributes. But there’s something really special about the Fascination Advantage program because of the fundamental approach to the assessment it dives into.

The basic premise starts with the idea that everyone’s personality has one primary advantage. That advantage represents what makes you different and how you add value to the world around you. It’s how you do what you do and how you do it differently than everyone else.

The best way to think of your Fascination Advantage is as your superpower. Your personality has a natural specialty and it is the ultimate differentiator.

Your primary advantage represents the way you communicate most effectively and how you connect with people. By honing in on this it allows you to be more authentic and confident in your interactions.

Unlike other assessments, it’s not focused on how you see the world, but rather how the world sees you. This provides a unique approach as it reveals so much that we may not realize about our strengths and the value we bring to those around us.

There are seven different advantages (also known as archetypes) and no advantage is considered better than the other. Each one has a distinct way of adding value and a different approach to relationships.

The seven advantages are:

  • Innovation

  • Passion

  • Power

  • Prestige

  • Trust

  • Mystique

  • Alert

There are also secondary advantages identified through the assessment and this is your second highest mode of communication. The secondary advantage describes how your use your primary one, and essentially functions as your “second language” meaning it’s where you fall back to when you’re not in primary mode.

When it comes to coaching, this is insightful information to have. Part of being a great coach is knowing exactly how to approach each person as an individual with their own communication style and being able to adapt your style to their needs.

As a coach, if you know each person’s advantage, and know your own advantage, you are in an optimal situation to get the best coaching results.

Armed with all of the finer details that the Fascination Assessment provides means a deeper understanding of the people you coach. You’re not focusing on who the person isn’t, but rather on how they can be a better version of themselves.

What Being a “Wise Owl” Means to My Business

I mentioned earlier I had a bit of an epiphany when I found out I was a Wise Owl. After years of chasing the idea that I would be known as a business rock star and trying to mold myself into being “more” it was a sigh of relief to let that all go.

I’ve always considered myself an introverted extrovert, and I assumed that that’s how other people saw me too. So finding out there was much more to it was a real eye opener, and it make me think about how this knowledge could be applied to my business.

You’re probably wondering at this point, what the heck does she mean when she says she’s a “Wise Owl”?

Here are some of the characteristics of my primary advantage (Mystique) and my secondary advantage (Trust):

  • You remain controlled and focused – without drama or emotional fuss.

  • You guard the details of your thought process and goals so that you can ensure results.

  • Your quiet, unassuming style conveys a thoughtfulness that others sense immediately.

  • You build success gradually but with the strongest foundations.

Coaching for Success with the Fascination Advantage

This information has enabled me to play to my strengths with my business, my brand and how I approach working with clients.

For example, as I’m engaging with potential new clients, I know I can give them a space to be heard and to come back to them with detailed, thoughtful strategy versus coming up with “big ideas” to wow them right on the spot. And that my approach is appreciated and respected as I’m intentional about what I put forth and am focused on their goals.

I’ve also learned through this process, that I don’t need to show up to a meeting and talk all the time. I’m at my best when I let my mystique – the language of listening – work its magic. With that superpower, I may hear things other miss or pick up on specific nuances of a challenge we’re having. That quickly sets me apart as when I do speak it’s thoughtful and it gets noticed.

Thanks to the Fascination Advantage, I no longer worry about being a rock star, and I just focus on being exactly who I already am. For any coaching situation, this powerful tool that helps people to be more confident and perform in ways that they may not even realize are possible.
